Agnes Nancy Turnbull

Younger sister of our Great Great Great Grandfather

Agnes Nancy Turnbull was born on 30 October 1812 in Leith, Scotland. She arrived in New South Wales on board the Portland on 88 December 1838, aged 26 years. She was described as a Housemaid, Church of Scotland, able to read and write a little, and unmarried. She was accompanied by her brother Henry and his wife Mary, and her sister Helen and her husband John Murdoch and their son John junior.

Agnes married Edward Bowen, a grocer, in Sydney, NSW on 10 August 1840. Edward Bowen was born c 1818, died 12 Jul 1870. They had a family of eight but four died as children. Only one of their daughters lived past 22 years of age.

• Unnamed male born 1841 but died before being named or baptised.
• Alexander Bowen b. 1842, married Jane Caldecott in 1865 and they had 13 children.
• Anne Morier Bowen b. 1843 and still living in 1864 but nothing more is known.
• Sarah Bowen b. 1846 Sydney.
• Caroline Sophia Agnes Bowen b. 1847 and married William John Porter at Sussex Street Sydney in 1864 aged 16 years. William either died or they were divorced around 1887 because Caroline married Richard Thomas James Summergreene in May 1887 at Goulburn NSW. Caroline died in Goulburn about a year later, aged about 41.
• Edward John Bowen b 1849 in Sydney but died as a child c. 1851
• Helen Andreson Bowen b 1852 and died c 1874
• Mary Jane Bowen b. 26 Jul 1854, d. 9 Aug 1854
