Youngest brother of our Great Great Great Grandfather
Archibald Turnbull was born 10 February 1828 at Greenock, Glasgow, Scotland and emigrated to Australia with his parents and elder brother James Alexander aboard the SS Macclesfield, arriving on 23 May 1833.
He married Elizabeth Jane McHattan, daughter of James McHattan and Martha McLaughlin, in 1853 in Presbyterian Church, Armidale, New South Wales, Australia. Elizabeth was born in County Derry, Ireland around 1835. She came to Australia with her parents aboard the Margaret, arriving from Greenock, Scotland on 24 January 1842. She died in 1885 aged 50 years.
Archibald then married Emma J. Cantle, daughter of William Cantle and Mary A. (?), in 1886 in Leichhardt, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. Emma was born c 1847, died c 1909. Emma was said to be an artist and some of her paintings are apparently in the Mitchell Library in Sydney.
Archibald spent all his adult life in the New England district - Armidale, Walcha and Uralla. He carried on may trades, mainly as a shoemaker, but also as a farmer, butcher, and miner. He is reputed to have been fairly successful in a mining venture at Glen Morison. He had persistent bad luck in the later part of his life.
He died in 1902 in Armidale, New South Wales, Australia, from heart disease and dropsy.
