Meagher is the maiden name of:
The surname Meagher, which is also recorded as Maher and other variants, derives from the Gaelic O'Meachair, meaning the male descendant of the kindly and hospitable chief. This sept was based in the Ikerrin barony of northern County Tipperary, particularly around the town of Roscrea.1
These Meaghers are the ancestors of Mary Meagher.
Michael Meagher and Catherine O’Brien are only known from the marriage record of their daughter Mary Meagher. It is likely that Michael and Catherine were born between 1800 and 1820 and married around 1835. Mary’s marriage record says that she was from Limerick, so it can be presumed that Limerick is also where Michael and Catherine lived and died. The marriage record also says that Michael was a farmer, so Limerick probably refers to the County rather than the town. Without a more detailed location the Tithe Applotment Books and Griffith’s Valuation are not useful and do not provide any additional information.
It is doubtful that we will ever know anything more about them.
These Meaghers are the ancestors of Jane Meagher.
Nothing is known of Jane Meagher’s parents, though they were probably from Kings County (Offaly) or northern County Tipperary and would have been born in the late 18th century.
