James Ramsdale and Betty Barlow

We now believe this couple is not related to us.

On 7 July 1789, James Ramsdale married Betty Barlow at All Saints Church of England, Wigan, by Banns, in Lancashire, with the ceremony being performed by John Gibson curate.

In the census of 1841 they were both listed as 75 years old, so they would have been born around 1766 if that is correct. James is listed as a "silk weaver" and they lived at Marsh Row, Hindley. In the 1851 census Betty appears as a "visitor" (born at Barton, Lancashire and aged 87) at her son Thomas' house at 27 Rotten Row, Hindley. Thomas is listed as a 50 year old "hand loom weaver silk" and is married to a Jane (aged 48 and born in Croft, Lancashire), with children Thomas (agricultural labourer aged 25), Jane (a "factory operative" aged 21), William (a coal miner aged 19), Samuel (16), George (14), and Rodger (10). It looks as though all of the younger children were also coal miners!

From the microfilm records their children were all born at Leigh.

Many people who lived in Lancashire worked in the cotton industry, as early census sheets show.
