Letters From New York
26 June 1966
Dear Nanna,
I have a red bicycle and yesterday I fell off my friends one and grazed and cut my arm one of the holes was very deep. I had a little bit of poison in it this morning but Mummy bathed it after mass and put a bandage and a scarf like as if I had a broken arm. How did you like our school reports? My puppet and painting are going to Geneva for a festival. We had our school play, and I was a lighthouse keeper.
Love Phillip

Hope you enjoy the news (such as it is) overleaf. With little else to keep them occupied now the kids have been at us at regular intervals to write to someone! WE got your very welcome letter on Thursday and I was very pleased to learn that you made it over to Fivedock OK. All the indications are that our furniture has arrived in this country - has got to be cleared through customs - and should (let us pray) be delivered during the week. The weather is really beginning to hot up now and, accompanied by high humidity, has been pretty uncomfortable over the past few days with very little relief in the nights. The country is operating to daylight saving hours and its quite light up to 8.30pm each night, making it difficult for us to convince the kids that it's bath and bed time. Phillip's crash from the bike was not serious - he's very prone to exaggeration - though he has got a cross looking graze. Indeed, they're all battling scars from knocks and bumps. They get filthier than I've ever seen them in my life here - the grit & dust is putrid - and its really a wonder that they've all been healing so well.
As you can see the pen is pretty sick, so will close. The usual bulletin will follow on Tuesday.
Love from all of us,
Your son,
Bill
