George Henry Phillips

Elder brother of our Grandmother

George was born on January 20, 1903 at Bombala. He Married Annie L Mead at Sydney on February 5, 1927. Annie was born at Annandale NSW on May 22, 1905. George was a sergeant in the NSW Police Force in charge of liquor licensing, which was undoubtedly an interesting field of work in the 1920s and beyond.

The family lived at 32 Barton Avenue Haberfield.

Apparently George was known as "Pud" - we have several photos of him with "Pud" written on the back. His son John confirms that story and says that "...the Phillips children, at least 4 of them, had pet names for each other. My Dad (George) was "Pud"; Thelma was "Coop" ( in fact I only called her Aunty Coop until I was well into my teens); Aunty Bern was "Hop". I have no idea where the names came from, but they always used them with each other. I don't know if Wal or Joel had pet names. If so, I don't remember ever hearing them".
