Childerhouse

Childerhouse is the maiden name of one of our maternal great-great-great-great-great grandmothers, Sarah Childerhouse. The sequence of surnames in the seven generations between us goes Childerhouse-Kerrison-Kerrison-Kerrison-Kerrison-Phillips-Rogers-Dwyer.

The surname Childerhouse is common in Norfolk and may be derived from the name of a village that has been lost over time, or from a resident of a children’s home or school attached to a monastery.

Stephen Childerhouse (c.1682-?) and Sarah Best (c.1677-1746)

Stephen Childerhouse is believed by other researchers to have been born in Norfolk around 1682. No evidence for this has been cited, and no record of the date or place of his birth or his parents’ names has been found by me.

Sarah Best is believed by other researchers to have been born in Norfolk around 1677. No evidence for this has been cited, and no record of the date or place of her birth or her parents’ names has been found by me.

Stephen and Sarah married at Wymondham on 1 May 1704 and had only one known child:

Sarah died in 1746 and was buried on 25 March 1746. It is not known when Stephen died.

Stephen Childerhouse (c.1705-1759) and Sarah Jackson (c.1705-1770)

Stephen Childerhouse was probably born around 1705 in Wymondham, Norfolk, the son of Stephen Childerhouse and Sarah Best (above).

Sarah Jackson was also born about 1705 at Wymondham, but her parents are unknown.
Stephen and Sarah married at Wymondham on 9 February 1729 and had three children:

  1. William (b.1731)
  2. Stephen (1733-1794)
  3. Sarah (our ancestor - 1736-1800)

Stephen died at Wymondham and was buried there on 24 November 1759. Sarah died at Wymondham and was buried there on 4 February 1770.
