Letters From New York
Monday 15th May 1967
Dear Mum,
I have just sent your son to bed with a couple of aspirin & a hot lemon drink. He has that silly throat and sore glands again. Don’t worry he is not real sick but not 100% either. Your letter arrived on Friday as usual & one from Margaret on Thursday. As always it was very nice to hear from both of you.
Julie Bartels and Cathy. 11 May 1967.
Cathy’s first Communion went off very well & she looked beautiful. She was very thrilled with the bracelet you sent her. We had a lovely little party & wished that all of you could have been over here with us. The day was perfect. We were a little worried because on the Thursday and Friday it rained but Saturday morning the sun was shining. Had a wonderful surprise this morning. Neil rang me from home & I spoke with all the family. They sounded great & all just the same I would have known their voices anywhere. Its good to know Neil is home safe & sound. I read over here how they got a wonderful welcome home in Sydney, the largest of any servicemen since world war two. When I was speaking to them on the phone they sounded as though they were just in the next room. As you can imagine I have been very excited all day. I [text cut out] days off colour myself last week with [text cut out] heavy head cold. Tuesday of last week [text cut out] Anthony home from school with a [text cut out]. Everyone (with the exception of Father) [text cut out] now. The weather is still pretty cold around 45° to 60° each day (more near 45 than 60 too) – I will be sure to tell Bobby Limb if we see [text cut out] that you are his true fan. |

Bill [text cut out] two French exams this week. I don’t think [text cut out] is looking forward to them either. The [text cut out] Friday night we have a big party [text cut out] Jill & Greg’s place. They have a relation [text cut out] & are throwing a party for him before he goes back home. I have offered to help with some cooking although with my stove the way it is I don’t enjoy cooking cakes as much as I used to at home. Did you have a nice Mothers Day? Hope our parcel has arrived by this for you. Lindsay’s 21st was in the same parcel. Hope he likes it. Sorry I can’t write all the news like Bill & my writing isn’t the best. Anyway hope you can read it [text cut out] I’ll leave the rest for Bill he might [text cut out] to fill in a bit tomorrow.
[text cut out] God Bless. Love,
Joan
Well, [text cut out] about this morning but you don’t know how difficult [text cut out] finding it to dice this sore throat. My neck [text cut out] ear have also been quite sore and the head hasn’t been too bright at times – a regular dose of the walking ‘flu (seems Joan went a bit awry with her sequence!). Saw the clinic here yesterday and have been given some tablets which have improved matters but this silly weather (hot, then cold, then hot again) gives one little chance of a good crack at it. Joan was quite put out by a very heavy head cold towards the latter end of last week and over the weekend but seems to be on the improve at last.
She was, naturally enough, quite excited about the ‘phone call from Fivedock though she did half expect something like that on Mothers Day. Imagine it would have been quite difficult for them to get through on Sunday. Except for Saturday, which dawned quite beautiful and was a lovely day for the girls, the weekend was quiet with Sunday being spent recuperating from Saturday. Catherine looked really lovely (and didn’t she know it too) and we hope to have some nice snaps to send out to you. We have a friend (the Chinese lad Francis Wong) returning to Australia next week and, if they’re ready, we’ll send some slides out with him and have him visit with the Rogers. Prepare yourself for an invite.
French exam on tonight and, as Joan said, I’m not very looking forward to it as I rate my chances of passing very low. Bought Joan a nylon housegown for Mothers Day and a swag of cosmetics from the kids (Jenny having thrown her previous lot down the toilet). Hope your day was good and that the parcel has arrived OK. Have had a letter from Margaret with lots of news and hope the news of the prodigal son is good.
Little other news so will sign off until next week.
Love & God Bless,
Bill
