Anthony Dwyer's Guitars

Early 1970s Gibson SG Standard

23 April 2020

Unfortunately I have lost the only photo of my guitar and I'm really just relying on memory. I know the serial number was 187294 and most likely made between 1970 and 1975. I know it had an unbound ebony fretboard with small block inlays like in these photos. I'm about 95% sure the bridge was the same on my one too. Both of these photos show examples from 1973. I read a post in an online forum saying that at around this time SGs could be made with bound rosewood boards or (usually) unbound ebony, depending on what they had available.

I bought it at a pawnbroker's auction in early 1983 for $300 but it turned out to have a damaged peghead and it cost me $175 to get it repaired. Quite a drama at the time. It had been given a matt black home paint job so that should have rung alarm bells for me at the auction but I was a bit naive and I liked the way it looked so I took the risk and bought it.

It must have played well because I used it for a couple of years. I can't remember precisely when I sold it but it would probably have been after I bought my 1968 335 in 1984 or '85. I sold it for $420 so I lost a bit of money on it.
